Procedure for Determining Surface Tension using a Stalagmometer:
1.Instrument Setup:Ensure the stalagmometer is clean and dry before starting the experiment. Fill the stalagmometer with the liquid whose surface tension you want to measure. Make sure there are no air bubbles trapped in the instrument.
2.Initial Reading:Note the initial level of the liquid in the stalagmometer. The liquid level is typically above the calibration mark.
3.Droplet Formation:Open the stopcock or tap at the bottom of the stalagmometer and allow liquid droplets to form. A droplet forms when the surface tension at the tip overcomes the gravitational force, detaching a droplet.
4.Observation and Recording:Observe the droplet formation and measure the volume of each droplet that detaches from the tip of the stalagmometer.
5.Repeat:Conduct multiple trials, recording the volume of droplets formed each time. Ensure consistency in the experimental conditions, especially in terms of temperature and liquid purity, to obtain reliable results.
